Clarifiying question about roasting

When making "roasted" vegtables or meats, or any recipe that has the word roasted in the title.....
The instructions just state to pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees..(or so)......do we set the oven to the roast or bake option before we set the temperature?

RE: Question About Roasting and Baking Settings

I typically just set them both at the same time. I don't think it matters much if the temperature is turned on first or if the "roast or bake" settings are turned on first. With that said, every oven is different so you will want to check the manufacturer's instructions to be sure.

You may also find this thread helpful?

Also note, that many recipes that say to "roast" or "bake" something often use the terms incorrectly. I have even read recipes that say to "roast the cookies" :-)

Here is a good article regarding from the Reluctant Gourmet called "Baking or Roasting, You Decide", that you may find to be an interesting read.

Hope this helps. Cheers!

roasting vs baking continued

So you are saying they are the same thing?!
Correct?

RE: Roasting vs. Baking Continued

No, for me, I am not necessarily saying they are the same thing. Depending on how the term is used they often imply different things (as the article mentions). I generally think of roasting at higher temperatures and baking a bit lower, but it really depends on what I am "baking" or "roasting".

Lets just say I would never tell someone to "bake a prime rib" (though technically it would sort of be the same thing, especially since it could be cooked at lower temperatures). Then again, I would also never tell someone to "roast the cookies" either :-)
