sauce for pomme frites (french fries)

sauce for pomme frites (french fries)

When we lived in the Netherlands we often ate pomme frites from the street carts. YUM. They were always served with a sauce they called mayonaise, but it was unlike the stuff we get in the jars here in the U.S. Anyone know what I am talking about? Anyone know of a recipe?

s.k.

Online Store

I was born and raised in Holland, I know exactly what you're talking about. The closest you'll get is to order it from a variety of online stores that sell 'authentic' Dutch grocery items, but even those won't be exactly what you'd get on the street. I really don't know what makes the 'real' mayo so special, I have a feeling that most of that is just the memory of being on the street.

I've personally ordered from http://www.dereuzegourmetmarket.com/, they have a variety of brands to choose from (the Calve mayo in the jar is considered to be the best, the one in the tube is more some sort of mayo-y sauce with herbs, not even close to mayo). Also check out http://www.thedutchstore.com, I'd try the Remia fritesauce in the plastic bottle, that'll be close to the street variety.

welcome

You're welcome. Snackbar food is one of the things that I miss most about Holland, you got me thinking about mayo now (and all the different 'snacks' they sell) :)

Well, now that you mention it,you have me started, you mean like bitteballen, croqetten, oiliballen,(spelling)and not to even mention whipped cream and chocolate!!!

I did go to the web sites you mentioned and the "remia" fritesauce is on back order if you can believe that.

thanks again
