If you really want to learn how to cook, then you need to practice the concepts taught in this lesson. We've compiled some "edible exercises" along with some supporting recipes that will help reinforce what was taught in this lesson.
To get yourself ready to make a stew, we suggest you start by learning how to cut up your own meat. Go to your favorite butcher shop and buy a large lamb, pork or beef shoulder roast and then make one of the recipes below. Note: you can freeze any extra meat.
Try building your own stew with your own choice of flavor combinations by modifying the Rustic Beef and Vegetable Stew (recipe below). For example, if you love Thai flavors, think about adding Thai-flavored ingredients to your mirepoix and liquid, or you can look to one of the recipes from the Braising Lesson to provide some guidance. Remember, once you learn the basic techniques and start applying them to your everyday cooking, you will be able to start creating your own recipes on the fly.
