Question:

I have a small chip on my Japanese knife. Can this be fixed by a wet stone or should I get it fixed?

— Laurie K

Answer:

It's a great question. And I think it really depends in the case of Lori's Japanese knife the size of the Chip and in some cases where it is a very small chip can be fixed with a whetstone at home as long as it's really just a very small little chip but anything larger where there might be any bending or anything that seems more extreme might need to have the blade essentially re-sharpened or honed down which would take some some of the weight and overall size of the blade off again. It really just depends on the depth and shape of that of that chip.
