Question:

To hone a knife, would a handheld plastic item with angled metal pieces be suitable or a steel only?

— Sarah Harbin

Answer:

Yeah, I would definitely use the steel instead of the plastic item with angled metal pieces. So yeah, honing is basically just taking the knife. So, you know, if you take if you have a knife and this is your edge of your knife like this eventually the very tip of the knife is going to curve over to one side or the other and what the honing tool does is kind of knock it off. So it's straight on the very end. So the steel is a specific tool to be able to do that and you can get different times. I'm in tips is probably the best because it goes through really quickly, but they're a little bit more expensive but I wouldn't use a plastic item with metal pieces on and I specifically use a steel to be able to hone your knife.
