Question:

I'm making the Cabbage Soup today which calls for leeks. I don't use leeks very often but I remembered that leeks need to be cleaned first. ?

— YVONNE TETREAULT

Answer:

Yes, so leaks are very dirty. They capture a lot of dirt in them and they have those kind of frons that kind of come out on the top. I typically like to cut those off just where it's starting to get green and then cut off, uh, the root and then I'll split it down the center and then run the whole thing under water, kind of pulling back each little rim so you can get all the dirt that collects in each one of those. So that's typically the way I'm going to be able to clean those out. Um, you can also, you know, quarter them and then long ways and then be able to cut those out or, uh, wash those out as well too. But by and large, you do wanna clean most of the produce you're actually doing, um, before using it as well. Um, just some of them are a little bit more dirty than others. Um, leaks are one of those spinach, uh, always a sandy, uh, leafy green as well too. So, um, yeah, but definitely, uh, wash your leaks before using them. You'll get a lot of sand in your mouth.
