Question:

Can you explain the best way to clean fresh mushrooms?

— Lucia Zimmitti

Answer:

Here's what I do personally. Um, personally, I will keep the mushrooms in the exact state that I bought them from, from either the grocery store or the farmer's market. Typically I'm gonna keep them in a paper bag. I'm not gonna keep them in plastic at all to be able to give them a little bit of breathing room on them. And then directly before using them, I'm gonna do one of two things. I'm either gonna give them a very quick rinse off in water or I'm going to use a mushroom brush and brush off all the access dirt that I can find on them. Depending on how dirty is which technique I use. If I see that there's just lots of dirt on them and they're caked in mud or something, I'm definitely going to wash them in a quick bath directly before using them and putting a pan. Um, the other method is basically to be able to just brush them off, um, with a mushroom brush or a paper towel or something like that. Um, typically dry and you can actually, you know, do that ahead of time too to be able to prep for it as well. So two different techniques for those. A lot of people say never get your mushrooms wet. You don't typically want to do that unless you're using them right away because they can develop other gross and stuff on them so you don't wanna do that as well. So if you wash them, put them directly into the pan after you wash them. Otherwise use a dry technique to be able to brush the outside in the dirt off of them.
