Question:

I’ve noticed that many people submit their photos for class assignments with a block of four photos. How is it done?

— Patty Bialak

Answer:

So I believe what you are referring to are, um, student photos, um, where the student has utilized a collage app, and there are a number of them online, um, many of them free of charge. And, uh, you know, in fact, right now on, uh, your screen on the right side, you'll see a few examples. And, uh, thank you, Patrick, for uploading those. Um, so Patty and others, um, please take note. Um, uh, first I'll say that, uh, you know, as you know, um, our assignments are, uh, formatted and designed for a single image upload, uh, you know, in, in a given slot. And the important accompanying part to that is your description, your rich description of what's going on. And, uh, it's important of course, to, you know, follow, uh, closely with the instructions, uh, as they do differ a bit from, uh, assignment to assignment, where in some cases we're very specific about what it is that we would like you to capture in your photograph. Uh, and other times the directions are more general, where we ask you to choose, for example, um, uh, a a key interim step or in process step, you know, one that you think is important to what it is that you are preparing, okay? Um, and that combination, in other words, one photograph and rich description, is adequate for us, for the members of our instructional team to see what's going on, uh, and to understand your comprehension of what you're doing and what's happening, okay? At that stage now, um, it's, uh, the, the, the description's pretty important, okay? So do take the time to, uh, look at our, um, uh, it ma many times you'll, you'll see an accompanying, uh, list of vocabulary to use, uh, to describe food smells and tastes and textures, uh, start to practice that new language. That's what we're talking about here. Uh, it, it really is a new language of the kitchen, and, um, it takes some practice. And so, uh, really that description is gonna be very important for you, uh, in developing your appreciation and understanding and ability to think about and to, you know, talk about food and of course, to communicate, uh, that experience with us. Okay? Um, if you do decide to use a photo collage, please limit your photos to a maximum of two images per upload. Okay? Um, very often when more than two images are included, you know, in a single collage and single upload, then the images themselves become too small for us to see the details of your good work, okay? In which case, um, you know, we're in a position to deduct points, uh, or in some cases to ask the student to redo the assignment or that part of the assignment, uh, which usually means redoing the assignment, right? Because it's a, it's part of a cooking process. So, um, please understand that our goal, right, uh, mutually here is to take a photograph, capture an image, uh, that shows clarity, um, with, you know, good lighting. Um, that's at a, a good distance, um, to highlight the details of what it is that you are discussing in your description and what, you know, we asked, uh, to be shown. Okay? That's most important. Okay? Uh, so please don't upload three or four or more images in a single upload, but limit it to two if you use a collage app.
