Question:

What are some tips for shipping perishables to keep cold and intact? Is shipping perishables worth the cost as a business?

— cynthia white

Answer:

So tips for shipping perishables. You know, uh, this is, uh, um, another question that kind of falls outside of the, uh, the purview of, of cooking, per se, uh, and gets, you know, into a, a specialty topic here of, uh, of, of shipping, packaging and shipping. Now, you know, when I've received perishable foods, um, it really depend, you know, it depends on sort of an infrastructure you're dealing with, okay? It depends on the food item. Um, and it probably even depends on, um, uh, local laws or regulations in terms of maintaining food safety. So there's some variables to consider here. But, um, you know, you've got those, um, uh, you know, uh, cool packs, um, that you can throw in the freezer, um, you know, that can be used to keep an item cold. Uh, there's dry ice that I have, uh, have seen used. I've even seen certain foods, um, packed in, um, saw dust, uh, and then shipped across some distance. Um, so there, you know, there are some, some different technologies out there, but I would recommend, uh, that you reach out, um, um, you know, to, uh, Dr. Google and do a search, um, on the, the food packaging and shipping industry, because this is, this, like, like I said, gets beyond, uh, our domain of cooking here at Rouxbe. A very interesting question. However, uh, and then you ask the question, is shipping perishables worth the cost as a business? And I think this really depends on your business plan and what it is that you're doing. And if you don't have a business plan, um, I'm a big fan of business plans, and I always suggest that students, uh, take the time to put together a business plan for their entrepreneurial idea. And, uh, one place to start is, uh, at score.org, g at s c o r e score.org. Or you can find a lot of guidance, uh, on starting a small business, uh, as well as how to put together a business plan. And it's within that context that you can start to, to investigate and calculate and play with different scenarios and figure out, uh, if shipping perishables, um, is worth it, you know, however you define worth it. Okay? Uh, and, uh, so that's my recommendation for you. Thank you.
