Question:
How do we clean mushrooms without tearing them and making them soggy?
— Deborah Goodman
Answer:
There are two fundamental ways that people tend to wash or, or clean mushrooms. And one is to use a brush, and you can buy a mushroom brush. Um, or you can buy just a, a, a a, um, a, a small, uh, brush that's got a kind of a medium stiffness, uh, set of bristles, uh, that you can then brush off. Uh, anything that, uh, is adhering to the mushrooms, whether it's a little dirt or pine needles or, uh, some, some, um, some moist moss, uh, from your foraging outing. Uh, and then you just move on from there. Um, is it perfectly clean? Probably not. Is that important? Not to me. Uh, if it is to you, then we might take the, the next, uh, approach, and that is to run the product under a gentle stream of water while we use our hands. You could use a brush as well. I've always found success with my, my, my, uh, fingers to just gently rub, uh, the mushrooms to remove, uh, the, the same debris. Uh, now at that point, um, you can put 'em in a salad spinner to try, try to draw out some of that excess moisture. Uh, you can set them out on towels and just let them air dry for a period of time. Um, or you can use them immediately depending on what your preference is. Okay? But those are a couple of paths that, uh, folks use. And, uh, those are two effective ways to clean mushrooms. All right.
