Question:

Are seeds considered a peanut allergy or is it it's own category of allergen?

— Candie Price

Answer:

It actually is its own category. Peanuts are typically in just a peanut, you know, allergy, it's usually just peanuts grouped into that one group. Now, there is a nut allergy too. Um, you know that a lot of, uh, people might have to say cashews, which are also related to hazelnut and some, some, some of those areas too. But those are typically different kind of breeds of nuts or, you know, different, like a walnuts or something like that would have kind of a different allergen as well. But a peanut allergy is basically like, you know, like a lot of schools you can't have peanuts in, but you could have something like sunflower seeds. In fact, a lot of schools, um, will use sunflower seed butter instead of peanut butter for their peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Um, but they are two different allergens.
