Question:

Is there any special place to purchase spices? For example, several recipes call for cumin seeds and all my stores carry is ground. Or, is there a way to substitute the seeds for ground in a recipe?

— Beth Redmond

Answer:

Yeah, that's I mean it's a little bit different, you know for ground versus the whole pretty dramatically different. So it's always better to try to get the whole ingredient if you can and then break them down into ground yourself, which actually adds a ton of flavor to those. There are a lot of different spice carriers out there. It's a Wonderful World to be able to get into and I would recommend trying a couple different ones to tell you the honest truth and seeing which ones you like best, you know, there are things like the McCormicks out there which are the huge bohemoth spice Empires right? But they're also something to be said about the small little you know. The boutique kind of style once you know, I know Barton Seaver has a friend that does a lot of different spice Blends and stuff like that, which is really great. But, you know try to find something maybe a little bit local a smaller provider near you online, you know orders are totally fine, you know, just make sure that they're up to date you they should typically if they're from a smaller Premiere we'll have an expiration date on them too. A lot of people don't realize that spices do go bad. It's not like they go bad. They just don't taste as good as they would if they're fresh. So when I buy spices I have a little jars, I keep my spices and put them into I'll put a date on the bottom of each one to make sure that I'm keeping it within a year and then replace them as well, but I don't have a specific place to send you for spices except for say to research a little bit on your own to find ones that either have a good story for you carry the varieties that you're looking for as well too, but getting those spices in a whole form instead of the ground is always a wonderful Cook especially if you're grinding them yourself, you know, you can get a special coffee like coffee bean grinder just use it for slices don't ever use it for coffee. If you're gonna to your spices in it would be great or you can use a mortar and pedestal was just totally fine. And that's actually the way that I typically do it as well. So I hope that helps it's a little bit of search ahead of you but you'll once you find them you'll start sharing with everybody, you know, there are a couple brands that I know but I'm I don't want to advertise for a bunch of people. So I'll just leave that to that if you do a quick search on Google for spice providers, you'll find they're a number of them out there.
