Question:

Having someone who still wants to eat a SAD diet at home makes mealtime difficult. Are there any ideas with the recipes that can be "adapted" for the hubby?

— Christina Ferrell

Answer:

I have dealt with this for years. As long as I've been doing this type of cooking. I've always had to figure out ways to be able to get the hubby or the significant other to be able to join the journey with many of my students the people I've been teaching the best advice I can give you is go right for the heartstrings go for the meals that he likes best and look at ways to convert them into a whole food plant-based meal. now there can be challenges in that like you're not gonna serve them a full on stake. Right, but can you look for other things that might mimic that and maybe the Satan brisket and you can do brisket tacos or something like that, you know, I've catered many events in Texas where you know, people had no idea that the whole thing was plant-based catering. You know, I've had a huge Rancher guy come up to me and tell me my potato salad was the best potato salad he ever had and they wanted me to give his wife the recipe and I gave his wife the recipe and he's like there's cashews in this and I used to cashew cream as my base for the you know, but I used the same flavor profiles you'd find in a potato salad every text as grocery store, you know with the yellow mustard and all but it worked great and hit the heartstrings because the flavor profiles are the things that brought those people back to the dish, you know, so I think that's probably the big thing is to be able to look at what they're used to and try to get closer to it and then You can experiment with going to the you know, kale and cranberry salad later. Right? But go with the things that they're Comfort foods and convert them into a vegan Whole Food plant-based recipe to start them out with it's okay if they're not a hundred percent on the journey with you, but you do want to make sure that they're actually on the journey a little bit with you and making the compromise of starting with some of the the items that they like a lot even if they might be a little more on the higher calorie end or something like that will help them on that transform of the journey.
