Question:
I have seen “Vegan Sugar” listed in plant based recipes. What is Vegan Sugar and why is it better than white sugar?
— Glenda Correll
Answer:
Well, here's the deal, organic sugar is always vegan because the processing part of making sugar does not include using charred bones of cows. And that's how they granulate the sugar in the process is by having these, these bones make the sugar. So that's why sugar is vegan. I know if you go to Whole Foods, they have a 365 brand and it comes in a green bag and it says across the top vegan. And I remember the first time I saw it long before I was plant-based, I would think, well, isn't all sugar vegan? And then when I went and read about it, I was pretty, pretty stunned and make sure that, um, I do not ever use a, uh, sugar that's not vegan. The other thing is, um, a lot of people say, well, what about brown sugar? Well, brown sugar is white sugar that has molasses in it. So unless it says vegan on it, I would definitely steer clear of that. So, great question. One of the most popular ones that, uh, we see everywhere in the world, uh, about, uh, baking, um, with sugar and other things like we talked earlier about maple syrup and deep paste and things like that.
