Question:
I’ve been pondering this recently: When is it appropriate to engage the Rouxbe 'Appeal’ button that comes with every graded assignment? What legitimate reasons are there beyond a do-over?
— Havelock Nelson
Answer:
So the appeal button, uh, or appeal function is provided, uh, so that a student can address a concern or an issue that, um, it, it could be, uh, a, a technical issue. Uh, it could be a, a comprehension issue. You know, for example, if, if the student feels the, uh, a quiz question was, um, not worded, uh, in a crystal clear manner, then, uh, that, that led to getting that, uh, answer incorrect. Uh, or, or even if it was answered correctly, maybe the student wants to provide some helpful feedback to us by highlighting a question that, um, let's say is not so clear in, in the way it's been written. So, that's an example, uh, of that. Um, you know, students, uh, don't always request to do something over. Um, you know, in the case of an assignment, uh, perhaps they want to address, um, uh, again, maybe some sort of a miscommunication, um, that resulted in some points being deducted, um, on occasion, you know, uh, uh, an instructor may miss something in a photo, um, you know, especially if it wasn't highlighted, uh, also in the description, uh, which led to a point deduction. And then a student might wanna address that and say, Hey, actually it's there, it's present. If you look in the upper right hand corner, um, would you consider, uh, you know, reevaluating this? And, um, you know, maybe adding a point back that was deducted? So that's sort of a hypothetical, uh, situation comes up occasionally, Uh, excuse me. Uh, and then, um, yeah, you know, as I mentioned in the, in the first example around a quiz question, a student might ask for consideration of a single question, so a single point, um, rather than an entire do over, uh, of the quiz. Okay? Um, so those are a couple of instances that, uh, come up occasionally. Um, you know, we do, uh, ask, you know, in the course, and I'll, I'll repeat this right now, that, um, you know, students prepare to the best of their ability before submitting an assignment or a quiz. Um, you know, read through the, uh, in, in the case of an assignment, the, the framework of the assignment understand what is being asked of you before you submit your work. And if you happen to, um, uh, experience the deduction of a, a point or two, let's say, and, uh, of course, the student, the, uh, instructor is gonna provide the student feedback, we, we do that with every point that's deducted. Um, please take that information in as a great learning opportunity. And, uh, you know, we ask that you not, uh, contest a point, for example, just because you want a hundred percent. Um, our focus is not on your score, it's on your learning. And we hope that you also are focused not on the numerical score so much as the learning that takes place each day as you engage with us here at Rouxbe. Okay? That's gonna be the most important thing in the long run, right? In terms of your, uh, confidence in the kitchen and the joy of cooking, uh, that you experience.
