Question:

What is the best way to care for a wood cutting board?

— Heidi Hanz

Answer:

That's a great question. So, uh, best advice for caring for a wood cutting board is one, don't ever use it in a dishwasher. Um, don't soak it in hot water. Um, you want to clean it with, uh, soap and water regularly, but, uh, a good vinegar bath on it is always good to be able to take out impurities, um, to be able to get any smells out as well too. Um, you know, if you get, uh, always clean the food off of it, so if there's something that seems a little stuck on it, make sure to scrape that off of it. Uh, when cleaning, if you get a spot or something, you can always use baking soda to be able to pull out some of the spots or, um, things that are soaking into that wood. And then oil it every so often. Um, you know, they'll start to dry out, so just take a little coconut oil or um, you know, they make a special oil or wax for them as well too. But I usually just go with the food safe, uh, oils to be able to oil them, um, and wipe off the excess to be able to do for that. But yeah, so wood cutting boards are definitely my preference. Um, you know, uh, if you're doing meats of any kind, I would, you know, recommend using plastic instead just 'cause they're easier to put a dishwasher and not worry about.
