Question:

Could you tell me how much protein I should be getting as a 73 year old. and where should I get it on a whole food plant based diet?

— Michele Nations

Answer:

So it's gonna be one gram per kilogram, so you're gonna have around 63 grams per day. What I tell seniors all the time I have a build healthy seniors program is that every time you sit down to eat, there should be a protein source there. So breakfast, lunch, and snacks. So if you're gonna have maybe some carrot sticks, make sure there's some hummus there with it. Or if you're gonna have crackers, a piece of cheese with it for your snack, uh, that way you will make sure that you get enough protein throughout the day. You don't have to be counting protein, but just making sure every time you sit down to eat, there's some protein there. That'll also help decrease a spike in blood sugar levels. That can be an issue with people as they age. So making sure that your breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all of sources of protein is a really great way you can snack on, on on nuts. Um, I know my aunt, when she was aging, she got what was considered, um, reactive hypoglycemia. And really what all that meant was that by two in the, by two in the afternoon or 11 o'clock in the morning, which was like three hours after she ate a meal, she would just crash. She'd feel like she has to fall asleep. Um, and that was her blood sugar level decreasing. So I told her just to have some almonds in her pocket and she did that and she was totally fine.
