Question:

What is the difference between broth and stock?
— Annette Barnhart Quiles
Answer:
In the culinary world we refer to stock as a, uh, it's basically where you take the bones of different meats and you put them into water, bring them to a boil and down to a simmer, and you basically are making a stock using the bones. Uh, broth is actually where you're actually using the meat, but in, uh, the plant-based world, which I, you know, uh, I don't do any meat at all. Uh, the plant-based world, um, broth is basically what we make using just plants. So that's all the trimmings and different things that we'll actually make a vegetable broth out of. Now that being said, um, outside the culinary world, like if you're just out at the, you know, talking with a friend, uh, those two words kind of switch between each other with really no, uh, you know, no difference between the two. But if you're talking to somebody in the culinary world, there's a difference between broth and stock. But again, if you're just going to talk to somebody and say, Hey, I need some vegetable stock, everybody's gonna know exactly what you mean knowing that there aren't any bones that are actually included in that as well too. So that's the basic difference between the two stock is where you are actually using bones, um, to be able to make, um, a stock and the broth is where you're actually using, um, a meat or if I using all vegetables on that as well too.
