Question:

What are the best ways to wash fruits and vegetables?

— Cindy Warner

Answer:

I don't know about the best, like if there's a single best way, although you, you'd mentioned plural here, but I will, I'll touch upon at least a couple of ways, couple of things to consider. And one would be to, to simply run it under some, some running wa running water, and just use your fingers to, uh, to rub the surface of the, the produce as needed to remove anything that's loose. And, uh, you might also consider a commercially available, in other words, from your, probably from your grocery store, um, available, um, a, a rinse. And it's gonna be in some sort of a concentrated form that you would dilute with water just following the directions on the label. And, you know, you would soak your produce for some number of minutes or some, some length of time in this solution. You can also create your own, um, by using baking soda. And, uh, you know, one, uh, ratio that I've seen is about a, a third of a cup of baking soda to three cups or so of water. And, you know, this can give you, you know, enough volume to, uh, to, to soak, uh, a number of, uh, different produce items, okay? And, and then adjust that of course, as you need to. Then there's vinegar, uh, you know, vinegar, uh, might be, um, a, a a a quarter cup to a half a cup per cup or so of water. Uh, you know, you can adjust that, uh, depending on, um, just what, what it is that you wanna, uh, wanna work with in terms of the intensity here. But, uh, those are some, some home, uh, remedies, some, some, uh, home options that you could easily put together and see if there's something in there that fits your routine. You know, in terms of when you buy, when, when you go shopping, as you unload your groceries, is your, is your kitchen sink clear or large bowls available to soak, produce and, uh, get all that stuff done before you store them, you know? Or is there a different routine where you might interject? Uh, you know, that, that soaking or cleansing step? But those are gonna be a few ways, uh, that people do this, and hopefully you'll find a solution in there that works for you.
