Question:
What would you advise for a side hustle for hot sauces?
— Maurice Peugh
Answer:
Well, uh, Maurice, there's a lot of things you need to do, um, in order to sell food to the public, especially when you're bottling something like that. So you might want to, um, look at a food safety course to be able to make sure that you're hitting the criteria for food safety, but there's also licensing. And then, uh, depending on where you are, we don't actually have a class for this, but, um, depending on where you are, there are certain restrictions put forth by the, um, uh, by food safety, um, you know, in the state, but also in your city as well too. So you'll definitely want to check in to see what, uh, the health inspectors, um, you know, criteria are, um, in your city. Um, and then also to be bottling products and being able to sell them as well. So that's the first thing I would say right away is make sure that you're meeting all the criteria of hitting, um, that you're hitting all the criteria of selling, um, packaged food as a business, there's a pretty big learning curve on that, so you might want to start small and just look at friends and families, um, to be able to sell, um, and then maybe talk to some other vendors like maybe go to a local farmer's market and talk to some other vendors that are actually selling a hot sauce or something like that, and see what they did to be able to start out that way. They'll help you with some of those, um, you know, food service laws, um, in your local, uh, area as well, um, and figure out how to be able to take that. So if you're gonna do that, wonderful, start small and then kind of slowly work your way up, uh, once you get the learnings. Um, and don't dump everything in kind of one batch right away, right? So, um, you know, make smaller batches, sell 'em to family and friends. Um, think about expiration dates on them as well too. And definitely think about your food safety laws in your local, in your local area.
