Question:

Best advice with picky eaters, have them involved in meal planning, shopping, preparation, and final enjoyment. Then emphasize, you are what you eat.?

— Michael Senteck

Answer:

And I will add one more thing to that, Michael, before we turn it over to Dr. Shah, is if you have a little garden, whether it's a four by four or a four by eight or your whole backyard, when children see how food is grown and they get to harvest it themselves, they also take a huge interest in that whole process. So I'm going to add that. But Dr. Shah, I think Mike has some, uh, Michael has some very good ideas. Do you have anything to add to that? Um, I have two things. Um, one of the things about being in California is we have, we're fortunate in that we have year-round farmer's markets. Mm-hmm. And so when my kids were young, um, I'm actually a terrible gardener. Uh, I struggled to keep plants alive, so gardening has always sounded very appealing to me. But, um, I'm a very good, um, shopper at farmer's markets and, uh, at our farmer's markets, they, o the vendors will often hand out like little samples. Right now. Stone fruit is abundant and it's so delicious and you can try, you know, different varieties of nectarines and plums and pluots and stuff. So, um, taking kids to farmer's markets is a great way for them to sort of, you know, experience and try things. Um, and then the other thing, and this is sort of back to my Rouxbe days, uh, when I was, you know, we had homework that would have, have to be rated and my kids really enjoyed being my food critics. And so in a very loving way, they would say, mom, I think this could use a touch more seasoning, or this could use a touch more asset. Can you believe they said that word? And so I think getting kids, you know, like invite the feedback and don't view it as a critical thing, but when you ask them, you know, I tried this new recipe, I'd really love to know what you think. They're really eager to kind of give you the feedback. 'cause I think for kids it can feel fun to be grading the parents. Um, so invite them to give you, you know, the feedback. I think it's, uh, it's a fun, it's a fun way as long as you can have a sense of humor about it, which I try to most of the time. I think having that sense of humor is a really good tool to have in your mis and plus as well, because when I teach classes live in the city to either children or older adults, children really, really love that hands-on experience and they enjoy the whole creative process. And I have always, always, or I have never seen a child who didn't eat something that they made. So it's also very exciting for them. So I think having your, your children be your, uh, your graders is a very good idea. So that's very, very good.
