Question:
When making oat milk, should the oats be rinsed before blending with water?
— Cecilia Litvak
Answer:
So for making oat milk, you will need to have, first of all, as Betty has, I'm sorry, as Cecilia has asked, you wanna wash the, uh, oats, you wanna wash them quickly in a bowl that with very cold water. 'cause you don't wanna release anything. Wash them in cold water, strain them, put them into a high speed blender, preferably if you have one. So to that one cup of flour, you're going to add four cups of very cold water. And here's the ticket. You do not want to over blend or beat this because if you do, you are going to get wallpaper paste. And I only know this because years ago I thought, oh, well the more I blend it, the better it's going to be. But it goes from being a milk to a paste. So 20 to 30 seconds, and then take it off of the base of your blender and strain it either in a nut bag or a double mesh stroller, a double mesh strainer, not stroller. And you will get a really nice amount of oat milk if you want to add sweetener to it. You can use a little bit, a little bit of maple syrup. You're gonna have to practice this a couple of times because the first time from my experience, it didn't come out great, but you kind of get to understand the flow of your blender and how your oats are, but wash them in cold water and you should be good to go with that. So that's a great question. We do have a video up on our social media, uh, how to make almond milk. So you might want to, uh, take a look at that. And just remember you're only gonna blend that, those oats and the water for 20 to 30 seconds. So I hope that that works out well for you and that you make delicious, um, oat milk. It will be a huge savings for you because some of the oat milks have really increased in price. So, uh, it's a good cost to saving, uh, mechanism to use.
