Question:
How long should one keep seasonings or spices?
— Judith Dickey
Answer:
That's a great question that not a lot of people really realize the standard shelf life. For dried seasonings or spices is about one year from the time you open it. So as soon as you take the seal off the top of the seasonings, I typically put a date on the bottom of the jar. I'll just take a sharpie and write the date that I opened. It might just have to do the month. Typically that's on the bottom of it. That way I know by you know, I'll do like the month in the year on the bottom and then you know by the next year. I know hey there have to use it up or get rid of it. So if it's something that you're not using a lot of by smaller jars of it and if you are something, you know, you use quite often that you can use a bigger jar of it as well too. But typically one year it's a shelf life for the maximum flavor for any dried seasonings or spices just to get the maximum flavor out of them. Great question Judith.
