Question:

How long do you recommend keeping spices and what is the best way to store?

— YVONNE TETREAULT

Answer:

You can keep the spices in the jar that they came in or the container that came in. I typically buy, you know kind of depending on where I'm getting them. But I usually buy them where they're already sealed and container, you know, so it could be just one of the little jar kind of things that they're sealed in and then you can just undo this deal on them. And as soon as I undo the seal I put the date on the bottom that I did it just the month and the day. Because typically dried spices last about a year after you've opened them. Now if they've been sealed on the shelf for many many years. They're definitely going to lose their flavors well, but once they're open to air just a little bit like that either gonna start losing their flavor and about the year period as about the you know, that's about the time where you start to see a gradual decline in the flavor of them. Can you use you know the cinnamon that's been on your counter for or in your cupboard for two years? Yes, you totally could it's not gonna kill you but it's gonna take a lot more of that sentiment or a lot more of that time or whatever. It is to be able to get more flavor out of it synonyms. Probably not the best example because it's a pretty potent one but something like time or Sage or something like that. You're definitely gonna see that it's going to lose its flavor a lot after a year. So that's what I was do and you know, I typically don't keep them in the jar. They come in. I have these little just they look like a little they're just resealable jars have like a Rubber seal around the top of it and they kind of clamp down. I think I cut them at the Container Stores something like that. So actually transfer them all in there and on the top of each jar it says what each one is and then I put them in there and that way I know they're sealed very well and then, you know, basically put a little sticker on the bottom or right usually in Sharpie on the bottom. And glass that can wipe off after time which is nice, but just putting the date on the bottom of the jar always a good idea. So at least know how long you've had them.
