Question:

When will all the gasiness go away? I have been eating plant based for 6 weeks now and I can't go out in public!

— Karen Soper

Answer:

I hear you. It is very common. Very common complaint the trick is it is all about consistency and time. And so basically you need to be consistent with how much you're eating. I'm guessing you know, usually it's like the the legumes or the cruciferous veggies that are the worst. So maybe you want to kind of, you know, be really careful and kind of time it but there are some things that you can do to work around it. So first of all, it's eating the same amount every day, you know, if you hadn't built up and you kind of went in Full full on full tofurkey as we like to say and you ended up getting really gassy then that should subside if you stay consistent with what you're eating if you're still tempering up the fiber intake, you know, go really slowly start with half a cup and then and a few weeks have a cup, but do it every single day. It's a consistency is gonna get your microbiome acclimated some people respond well to probiotics That can help too. But some other kind of Lifestyle things is not eating too much, you know, like not eating till you're really really full because that will enhanceiness if you eat too much and eating less will help improve function. The other thing is chewing slowly, you know, a lot of us, you know, we get through a meal really quickly and that just we're eating more air. We're getting more air into the digestive tract and you know, because of all this fiber it just if you don't chew it it's gonna be unabsorbed or less absorbed. It just takes more to absorb it and that's gonna cause like, we're the short chain fatty acids and all that stuff that's happening for the stuff that's happening in the gut level where the microbiome is kind of the bacteria are kind of they're like, oh fiber it gets all excited, but you really want to have it as chewed as well as you can. This is not easy. We're all busy and it's just you know, it's not easy to really chew as much as we can. But there's a lot of thinking like Fletcher ISM and macron macrobiotic diets where you try to choose chew your food until it's into a cream. I don't like the way that sounds but that's what they say just to chew it as well as you can and as slow as you can to help the digestive process some people, you know want to take some of those enzymes help with some people but the overall thing is you just have to go slowly. So I guess while you're with your family eat less less overall, maybe eat less frequently and oh and the other lifestyle tip that I found helps people myself included. Is to keep your liquids separate? So the reason I say that is because you know anytime you're drinking a lot of liquids, you're going to dilute the digestive enzymes that you have naturally coming out of your mouth and secreting through your stomach all of that. So keep your liquid like maybe take off but give yourself half an hour before you eat with no liquids then eat your food with out liquids during the meal and then afterwards give yourself a good hour to digest and get it past the stomach and then you could resume liquid consumption. So sometimes, you know, a lot of people drink a lot while they're eating and that could maybe interfere but it helps a lot of people and it helps me as well. So I've experienced that too. So those are some tips also avoiding straws and chewing gum the common stuff that adds air to the digestive tract but most of all just stay the course it will get better. I promise it will get better and make sure overall you're eating all those healthy foods and you're just staying consistent other things that kind of cause gas to surprisingly is like sugar, especially when you're eating refined sugars along with all that fiber that might contribute to it. So patience and I'm sorry, you could just apologize to your family up front and just make a joke out of it because so it lightens it up for everyone no pun intended and and stay the course that's worth it. You'll get past this. I promise.
