Question:

Are there culinary techniques that can strengthen our ability to smell and taste as we age?

— Traci Pichette

Answer:

Yes, she's bringing up the fact that as we age, our sense of smell decreases, which then affects flavor. Um, and I don't know of anything that can prohibit that change outside of just regular healthy aging, which would include exercising, being hydrated, um, continuing to eat food, adding spices to your food and making sure that there's nothing wrong there. A lot of medications affect your ability to taste. So some of that, um, maybe you can ask your doctor if there's a different form of medicine that doesn't affect that. But again, it really is the better we keep ourselves as we age, the more we love ourselves and nourish ourselves. True nourishment, which is what food is all about. It's not about the hyper palatable foods, it's not about the processed foods. It's really about honoring and loving ourselves enough to give us that true, true foods. Um, whole foods is the way we live to age well and that's the best I know in my 40 years as a practitioner.
