Question:

Will keeping a pairing knife in a wooden knife block that holds knives at an angle dull the blade?

— Cynthia Dudak

Answer:

I don't think that should be a problem. Um, a a wooden knife block is, um, uh, a pretty common way to store knives. Um, you know, one of several ways, but a pretty common way, uh, what you might consider is, you know, when you slide the knife in to put the, uh, the cutting edge up, okay? And so that, um, you know, what, what would be the, the, the top side, uh, is down. Um, and then you don't have to worry about, you know, the cutting edge making contact. But, um, uh, I don't see any problem with that particular storage method. Uh, I think even more importantly is gonna be, you know, otherwise your maintenance of, uh, the knives. And, you know, we talk about chef's knives a lot, but even with pairing knives, it's a good idea to put them on your honing steel or your honing rod, uh, you know, before each use, you know, maybe it's once a day, for example. Um, and, and maintain that blade, uh, in, uh, you know, it, its tiptop, uh, cutting, um, uh, fashion, okay. And then sharpen it also, uh, periodically. Uh, very often, these, these, uh, smaller knives or secondary knives get, um, eh, they get pushed to the side with a lot less attention than, uh, the chef's knife or whatever your, your larger main knife is that you use. But, um, you know, pairing knives can be very important in the kitchen. Um, and they're, you know, they're great utility knives, uh, you know, in, in their, um, uh, all purposeness and, uh, so do take the time to, to hone them regularly and to sharpen them as needed.
