Question:
Can you share any info about the safety factor using the Food Saver vacuum sealing appliance?
— Natalie Miller
Answer:
So food saver vacuums are wonderful machines. Uh, I know a lot of people that use them. Um, I have one myself. Um, and they're great for being able to keep food longer, which is fantastic. Um, a lot of people will kind of scoff when they see something like a Persian cucumber at the grocery store wrapped in plastic, um, that's actually keeping the cucumber fresher longer, which is great. And that's basically what the vacuum seal is doing as well. Vacuum seal is also wonderful for exactly what you're saying. Preserving, um, and doing freezers, it's really good for doing ferments as well. So if you wanna do some fermentation using a vacuum seal, it's fantastic for doing that as well to make sure that there's no impurities. Um, inside the, the vacuum seal, I've also seen people use 'em in ADEs as well, so doing other cooking techniques. So they'll take the bag and put it into the water that you have the sued in. Um, so I actually like them as a tool. I think it's a great idea. I don't use mine a ton, um, except for maybe freezing is probably the biggest use that I use it for. Um, you know, if I'm u using something like pretty regularly in my fridge, I'm going to use something that reseals like, just like a Ziploc style, which can also be washed out. A lot of people don't realize that, but actually you can look up a tutorial and washing out your resealable bags for multiple use, which is fantastic. I really do recommend doing that as well. But the vacuum ceiling is more for, um, you know, especially being in the Midwest here, uh, preserving things through the winter is a great way to be able to do that. Um, and I have seen a lot of people using them for fermentation processes as well. Just remember that when you are fermenting something, that they will release gases and they will, instead of being really tight, they'll actually start to expand out a little bit. Eventually, if it becomes too big, you might actually have to cut a hole in it to be able to let some of the gases that are coming out of those. So food saver vacuums, ceiling appliances, wonderful. Love them. And I definitely recommend if you already have one, great. If you don't have one, don't worry about it. You don't have to run out and buy one. They're not an essential need, but, um, they are a great thing and a great tool to have, right.
