Question:

I usually buy my fresh produce once a week and lately my berries don't last, do you have any tips to store them. Thank you.?

— Ruth Avila

Answer:

I actually was talking to Chef Char about this and asked her her opinion. There's a lot online about from culinary magazines and things talking about how to store your berries. So I wanna show you something, Something like raspberries. They're soft. I mean, you can see on this paper toweling, the juices are already starting to go there and I touch them and they're soft. They are not going to last a week. They might last for two days. What I do is I get my berries home again. I pick through them, I get rid of any that aren't, that are perhaps a bit too soft. Certainly anything that looks like it's getting moldy, I get rid of that right away and then I lay them out. Don't wash until you're ready to use them. So raspberries are not something that are going to last a week. Blueberries, it depends. My daughter brought me some blueberries from the farm. She doesn't have a farm, but she has a lot of produce from a farm in the area in Bucks County. They were fragile, but blueberries, oh, they're, oh, here are my blueberries. The blueberries that are plump like this are going to last longer. And strawberries. I know Schiff char keeps her strawberries in a jar and she says they last a really long time that way. I tried it 'cause Chef Char knows what she's talking about. And I have seen this idea online and it was okay for a couple of days, but after that they didn't get mushy. But I didn't like the way they chased it. So I think the, you know, my answer to you is I, it's hard to buy all produce once a week. Apples, oranges, mandarins, maybe some strawberries probably, but that's about it. There there is a lifespan of these more fragile fruits. I will tell you that since I swapped out, this is a new refrigerator behind me, my, my produce is lasting a lot better. So you know, there's that too. And another thing is I showed you in the eat mess here, these, um, food safe silica pads and I tuck them into paper bags that have mushrooms, sometimes berries, you can try that. So I asked Char for an answer, chef Char. And here it is regarding storing fruit cut, fruit add to airtight containers, store in the back of the fruit where it's gonna be really cold and date the container. And that's really important. You should be dating everything, everything.
