Question:

When using your fresh herbs, does aquaponic vs organic make a difference in the amount of phytonutrients that the plant gives?
— Eugene Johnson
Answer:
So when plants are growing, they make their own vitamins. So the vitamins isn't going to differ. Isn't that cool? What is taken up through the roots are minerals. And the third thing you wanna pay attention to is your phytonutrients. Now phytonutrients are those superpowers in plant-based foods and they taste bitter. And the reason they taste bitter is because that's the way the vegetable saying, don't eat me, I'm bitter. It's the way to protect itself. So when you stress a vegetable and yes you can stress a vegetable like you can stress any of us, it creates more phytonutrients and being in an aquaponic environment is more stressful for the plant. So it's gonna make more phytonutrients as one study. We'll have to see if that, you know, continues to be seen. You don't have to worry about the vitamin content, but I, it's hard to compare unless you know what is in that aquaponic solution. Are they putting the minerals in there so that the plant can absorb it? So I can't give you a a like a very hard and fast rule. Like organic is always better than aquaponic. Um, or in soil versus in water because I don't know what the solution is when it comes to organic. This is how I feel about organic fruits and vegetables. I have spoken about this and dug deep into this for 30 years now and have come up with as many in the field have done who are experts in it. It is more valuable for you to eat fruits and vegetables and we're talking like four servings of vegetables, three servings of fruit a day than it is to worry about organic. So for instance, if all you can get is, is non-organic fruits and vegetables, that is fabulous. If however you have the money to buy the organic foods, then when I was going through cancer, I bought the organic foods because I had a reason to not put anything else in my body. And I find that depending on where you are in life, in life, that is important to some people, especially people with little kids. There's people that are, are ill. And with that I'll go to the dirty dozen healthy 15 lists. And if you don't know about that, Eugene look up CSPI. Um, consumer science and the public interest, they have this list they put out every year based on the amount of pesticides on the outside of the fruit or vegetable. And you can look up if I only have this amount of money and I really don't want foods high in pesticides, what are the foods that are the cleanest and that aren aren't gonna have a lot of pesticides on it? And what are the vegetables and what are the worst ones, right? And then, and do it that way. So I hope that helps.
