Question:

Can you explain food photography?

Answer:

One of the most important things in doing an assignment is having good pictures and I do remember vividly as a student having my shopping list having to go to a specialty grocery store sometimes because it was hard to find a specific ingredient. And with all of the layers in an assignment, it's as though you put your whole heart into this. So taking the photo should be a reflection of the passion that you put into this project and photos should match the beautiful description that is attached now. Here's one thing. I don't want you to become food photographers for you know, naturally Living magazine because sometimes there are flowers and there are photos and these distractions and the photo isn't the photo of the food isn't seeing so that you can measure all of the talking points that we speak of in an assignment. So let's have Patrick put up a couple of photos for me and I think the first one is going to be a photo of let's see. let me Quick tips. So the quick tips is you know, just a lot of I think really common sense and I took this photo eating at a restaurant in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, because actually I was with Frank Costigan and we shared this bowl of mashed potatoes at a vegan restaurant in Lancaster called Roots. So what I want to tell you is that natural light avoid shadows and in my kitchen drawer, I keep a tripod for food photos. So this way when it is time to go out on my porch and take some food photos. I have to just throw this on the tray with my food and I'm good to go when I was a student often time. I cooked late at night. And if you have fluorescent lighting in your home, it will sort of give a yellow cast to the photos that you take and that takes away from the true vibrant colors of what you're doing. So I would suggest you can make the food at night and played it the next day and when that happens You just walk out with your food and you style it maybe you use forceps to get you know that pee in place or whatever and you've got your tripod and you're good to go and I will say that these will probably the best mashed potatoes I ever had in my life next step we have. Let's see. What's up next Patrick. Whoops. Sorry about that. so when you take a picture of your Nissan Plus It's called a flat lay you want to be standing over the photo? And the reason why you want to stand over the photo is so that we can see all of the ingredients we can count them. I can see how organized your kitchen is. I can also observe the cuts of the food that you are using because as you know, good cuts are crucial to making a delicious dish. So the flat lay is basically used for things like the Nissan Plus and then I have this picture of the zoom in because I thought by the way, all of the photos that you have seen are photos from my Rouxbe days, so I thought this photo was great but it's not zoomed in because you can't see the sides to the pie. And so the photo itself. I thought so wowie Uncle Howie, especially with that Coco silhouette of a fork. Are you kidding me? And I remember having two points taken off the assignment because my instructor couldn't see how clean cut the Of the pie actually worse so photos count. They are your everything keep it simple a white plate, as you know, always works best and do we have one more photo by the way? Okay, there we go. Anyway, if you have any questions about food photography, there is a unit in your curriculum about photo taking if you have a specific question of about a photo feel free to email me. I'm always happy to answer your questions. And by the way, there is an attachment for from the high school the iPhone photography school for taking pictures of food. He's got some great tips, which you might like to find. So I hope that that's helpful to everyone.
