Question:

Can you share any suggestions on high protein and low carb? My nutritionist wants me to lower my carb intake because I don't burn them sufficiently.

— Cecilia Vélez-Rivera

Answer:

I love this next question because I think that, uh, and again, this is personal, but I think that, um, it's important to think about what you like to eat and be more concerned with something that fits into your diet and also become a very good label reader. Now, I'll give you an example, and that would be, uh, if you made a dish with a cup of tofu in it and a cup of broccoli and a cup of quinoa, you would have a dish that contained 30 grams of protein, which is almost a daily requirement for one person. So start reading labels, look at legumes and some vegetables that are high in protein include broccoli and asparagus. And, uh, don't forget beans. And the other thing I like to talk about is making sure that you read labels so that the, uh, you can see the protein content. So a half a cup of beans is eight grams of protein. So that is a good amount of protein for a half a cup of beans. And the question is, who eats a half a cup of beans? Another good source of protein is going to be some quinoa. Uh, we have some great quinoa salad recipes in the Plant Pro course. Uh, a cup of cooked quinoa contains nine grams of protein. So it's all about looking at labels and introducing some new foods into your kitchen, which I think is very, very helpful. And one more thing, uh, brow rice has protein in it. So there's protein in everything. We need to move away from thinking that there's only protein in animal products. And if you start reading labels, you will be amazed at the plethora of, uh, ingredients that are very protein rich that are plant-based. And last but not least, 'cause who doesn't like a little dessert? These are some dates. These are, uh, rancho meco dates. My favorite dates now available at Walmart. Uh, two dates contains, uh, a gram of protein. So you have two dates. You're going to stuff it with a little bit of some peanut butter. This happens to be Teddy's family owned business, terrific, terrific flavor. And then you're gonna melt some chocolate. And this chocolate, there are two grams of protein in a serving. So if you had two dates, and this two pieces of this candy would, I'm calling it candy. It's not really, candy would contain about 10 grams of protein. So it's looking at labels and also finding things that you like and that taste good to you.
