Question:

What is a good source for us to purchase edible flowers for garnishing?

— Melissa Bryant

Answer:

So I typically, there are a couple things that I do about this for, uh, edible flowers. One of them is I grow them in my own garden when I can. Um, I also have an indoor garden, which is great to be able to have things. So if you have flowers growing off of them, you can grow edible flowers the same way. Um, I would highly recommend trying different local farmers markets as well, but you can also get them at different retailers like Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, which will typically have edible flowers. Um, I did kind of a quick search before coming onto this and also found this gourmet Sweet Botanicals, which is a great source just in California, basically, where you can, um, order them and they'll ship them to you, which is pretty cool. But I would, um, with anything edible, I would always try to source as local as possible to start. So try in your own backyard and if you can't, like right now be in Wisconsin, I'm not being able to grow anything in my backyard. Uh, try local farmer's markets because a lot of them will be growing hydroponically or inside and you'll be able to find, um, you know, great flowers or something like that. You might need to ask them even if they don't have them out, because a lot of farmers don't think about the market of edible flowers. So if they're growing something like, uh, basil, you know, they're usually cutting the basil flowers off to be able to get more of the power to go into the basil, um, you know, leaves. Um, but if they're cutting them, that means you can usually use them for something else as well. So you might wanna ask the farmers at a farmer's market if they have edible flowers, and if they don't, then would they mind bringing some the next week when you see them?
