Question:
What is the correct way to cut an onion and a mango?
— Gina Windisch
Answer:
So definitely two different techniques here, and I just happened to see this question pop up, so I went and grabbed an onion right away. So basically what you wanna start with, with your onion is you're gonna cut both sides of it off. So I cut the root side off here and then cut the top off as well. And you're gonna flip the onion and cut it directly in half. So you have two basically halves. I always say it looks like a sun rising or setting depending on your mood. And so now if this is in half, it would basically make slices all the way through this end, but make sure not to slice to the other side. So you'll basically have kind of ribbons of the onion that goes that way. After you've cut it that way, you can turn the onion and then cut down this way and it'll actually do a dice on it. If you just wanna do a slice, you can just, uh, go right from the end and go all the way through the onion. But if you wanna dice, just don't cut that far end when you cut it on this side, um, it'll make those kind of ribbons, then you can cut it this way to be able to do a dice. So that's probably the easiest way to be able to, uh, slice and dice an onion for a mango. Um, it's a little bit different. Basically, I'm gonna use my onion even though I don't have a mango here as an example. So you basically want to stand the, uh, mango up on end with the root, uh, or the this, basically the tips going up and down like this, and you're gonna take your knife and basically cut straight down the center. But you have to remember there's a very wide pit or a very tall pit in the center, but it's quite skinny. So once you cut in, you'll actually hit the pit. So you're just gonna arch your knife just a little bit and kind of cut along as you go through this way to just go on the outside of the pit, you're gonna do the same on the other side as well. So you'll end up with just a very thin layer right in the center that contains the pit. You'll have a little bit on the each side of it as well too, but that basically gives you two halves of your mango. So after you do that, you can actually score the mango on the inside, kind of like you would in avocado. Then it'll actually flip inside out to be able to get the squares of those mango, um, chunks out. That's probably the easiest way to be able to cut a mango. You can get it into the squares like that if you don't want it in the squares. Um, having each half like that as well too, you can, um, you know, use a spoon to be able to go through or basically peel out the outside of it as well.
