Question:

I would like to incorporate hemp seeds into our diet for the nutritional benefit but am unsure what to purchase to get the best nutritional value. Do you suggest hulled or the whole seed?

— Peggy Peterson

Answer:

So hemp seeds are great for nutrition, uh, really great for micronutrients. Um, the big difference between a whole seed and a whole seed is just like you would think in rice or any other thing, is the, the majority of the fiber is contained in the, of the seed for hep seeds. So if you're looking for really high fiber, you definitely want to keep the whole seed. If you're basically looking for nutrition and, um, you're not as worried about the fiber, I mean, there's still like a good amount of fiber just in the hull as well. Um, but most people are going to get the hold or what they call hearts. Um, the, the, uh, hemp hearts, um, those are probably the more popular just because the mouth feels also different, you know, so like in a seed for a hemp seed, they're gonna be a little bit harder, which is fine, but, um, you'll definitely find them in your food when you're chewing, um, for the hold, you're not going to get the same bite, um, you know, where you're finding little seeds basically in your food because, uh, it's much softer. So when you're chewing it, it's going to collapse in your teeth much easier. Um, and you're not going to notice as much you'll get a, a flavor out of it. But, um, yeah, so that's basically the main difference between those is the whole seed is gonna give you a lot more fiber. You will get, uh, you know, a little bit more of the nutrients out of, of it as well from the whole seed. Um, but hold is typically what most people do, uh, you know, have as far as adding, you know, uh, on the top of like a salad or, um, adding onto the top of other food. Um, so yeah, but the best way is to be able to experiment with both and see what works best for you.
