Question:

What are your thoughts on juicing? Do you regularly juice and if so, can you discuss the benefits and can you recommend an affordable juicer?

— Victoria Mulligan

Answer:

I actually don't regularly juice. I own a juicer. It's like an old one, it's like a champion 8,000 or something like that. I'm just making up the number on that. But it's a champion juicer. Um, it's one that's like kinda long and it takes up a ton of space. Luckily I have space downstairs in the basement because I don't ever really use the thing. Um, on very rare occasions I will use it to make soups and things like that. Um, but that is probably the majority of what I'm gonna be using my juicing for. Oh, and canning things. So doing like different sauces and stuff like that, a lot of times I will use it for something like that. But just drinking the juice on its own, I don't really drink a vegetable juice unless it has kind of all the stuff in it. Um, and what do I mean by that is basically when you're juicing things, you're taking the fiber out of it. And, you know, as plant-based, uh, people, we like to have a lot of fiber in our diets as well too. Um, so if I'm going to be doing a juice, I'm typically going to be using a, uh, like a blunder and making more of like a smoothie instead of a juice. Now there are benefits to drinking juices. You get a lot of nutrients and micronutrients out of drinking the juices. I just, uh, personally would rather go for the actual vegetable itself than um, puring it down and breaking it down to a microscopic level that my body can easily digest. But my body actually goes through the work to be digesting something like, um, like celery and carrot, uh, just by, you know, eating that product at the same time. Um, if you are, you know, wanting to do more juices, that's fantastic. Um, there's nothing wrong with that as well. You'll get a lot of the micronutrients, um, and vitamins out of that. Just remember to be able to follow up with a lot of fiber at the same time. As far as a good juicer or a drinking juice, um, I can't really make 'em a recommendation 'cause it's not something that I regularly do. Um, I might every so often go get like a wheat grass shot or something like that. Um, you know, but I usually do that at, um, a, uh, a store or a location or something like that. Um, but uh, the champion juicer has worked well for me for 15 to 20 years that I've owned it. Um, and it's worked great for doing different kind of soups and sauces.
