Question:

I would love to grow cilantro but have not been successful at all with this herb, any suggestions would help, thanks!?

— Sue Baker

Answer:

You know, I have had success with cilantro. Um, you know, sometimes I think my success in the garden is accidental success. Um, I don't claim to be a, a gardener, although I certainly enjoy the garden. Um, you know, when it, when it comes to cilantro, uh, I've noticed a couple of probably main points. And one is cilantro doesn't like extremely hot weather and intense sun. Um, yeah, I am, I'm in the, uh, the, the, the Portland Metro area today in, in Oregon. And, uh, we, we just are coming down from a, a, you know, upper nineties, uh, degree Fahrenheit weekend, and that would be too much for cilantro. Uh, we're getting down into the mid eighties, which is probably a happier place, uh, for this particular herb. And, um, also, uh, not too much water right in, in the soil. So, um, if your soil is particularly dense, uh, then it, it should be amended, uh, to lighten it up for better drainage. And see, those are the, the couple of things that I picked up over the years. I'm sure there's some other fine tuning that one can do. Um, but start out with those, uh, and see how your, uh, particular environment stacks up.
