Question:
When storing freshly baked breads (hot cross buns) should they be frozen or left on the counter until the weekend?
— Hilda P J
Answer:
Because a lot of us are running to the grocer, picking up things that we might need for a Sunday dinner for those of us who celebrate Easter, and Passover starts tomorrow at sundown. So we have a lot of holidays going on this week. But to Hilda's question, she just bought some hot cross buns, which are a yeast bun, very delicious. Everyone loves them. Her question was, should she put them in the freezer and wait until Sunday, or what should she do with them? She didn't know if she should leave them out on the counter. Never on the counter, because by Friday, they would be really like hard rock. So my suggestion and my practice as well is that you want to wrap them well in a protective film. Maybe you like plastic wrap or whatever, but you're going to wrap it well, and then you're going to store it in an airtight bag, and then you're going to put it on a flat surface in the back of the refrigerator where you have the most constant temperature in your fridge. And then Easter rolls around. Hopefully, you haven't eaten any before. They would be a mouthwatering treat for me. You're going to take them out, remove the plastic bag, remove the film, and let them thaw. And then I would pop them in the oven for about five minutes at 350 degrees in a conventional oven, and then I would serve them warm to my guests and family.
