Question:

What type of insurance coverage is important when starting a culinary-related business?

— Melissa Bryant

Answer:

Okay, let's play it this way. You have an event, and someone is enjoying your food. And you have meticulously listed, or so you thought, all of the ingredients on a little recipe placard that you were going to keep next to the food. And maybe the person making the sign for you forgot to add one of the ingredients, and the person eating it is allergic to it, and they have an allergic reaction right in front of you. That's why you need insurance. That's the best way. And I don't mean to scare you, but I think that's the best example that I can give you. Its initials are FLIP, and it stands for Food Handler Insurance Program, and I pay it every year. And fortunately, no one has ever gotten sick, but I always feel really happy that I have that insurance. It's just like having insurance for your car. And I would suggest to call into the Rouxbe 1-800 number, because my understanding is that there is a similar program that we provide that is very similar to Safe Serve and also accepted when you're doing events and other things like that. And one other thing, I often work with food banks who will help supply food for classes that I might be teaching. And I work with one organization that not only do they give me the food to make the recipes, but they provide the produce for the participants to take home with them. So it's kind of magical, but I was totally surprised when they came to me and said, "We need your Safe Serve, and we need your insurance." So it's just a good thing to have.
