Question:

What is the best way to store home-grown sprouts?

— Mitch Miglis

Answer:

It kind of depends on how you're sprouting. If you are sprouting in a mason jar that has the lid on the top of it, and you have the sprouts in there, it's actually just best to put the whole mason jar right in the refrigerator. It keeps it nice and cool, and they'll last a little bit longer for those. If you're growing them in a tray, I would actually keep them in the tray growing, which is nice. But then when you trim them off, you basically want to put them into a small container that can be sealable. I'll usually put a wet paper towel on the bottom of it, a damp paper towel, not wet, you don't want it soaking. But I'll put that damp paper towel basically on the bottom of everything, and then have the sprouts on top of that, and then lightly seal the top. I wouldn't close it all the way. I just want a little bit of air to be able to come out of it. But that's typically how that does it. And that doesn't give you a huge lifespan, but it'll give you probably four to five days for those sprouts that are being grown as well, too. And the other method, if you're doing them in the jar, just easy to be able to put the jar right in the fridge and take them out as you need.
