Question:

What are the best types of storage containers to use for the freezer? For the life of me, even when filled a full inch below the top, how do I keep the mason jars from breaking?

— Dyana Robenalt

Answer:

I prefer, if I have a choice, I prefer glass over any kind of container. But freezing things in glass, particularly mason jars, can be a real disaster, because as your food freezes, it expands and often breaks the jar, and that's not so great. So I use Cambro containers, which come in all different sizes. They are said to be BPA free. They are used in commercial kitchens. The top seals very tightly, and that's how I store my items, in these instead of in glass jars. Occasionally, if I don't have a lot of something, I have here, this was a little leftover cashew cream that I added some strawberries and cardamom. Delicious. And I froze it, and there's not a lot in here, so I wasn't worried about it. And this is a very heavy glass, so that worked. But you would have to leave a lot more than an inch below the top to keep your mason jars from breaking. I really do suggest that you look into some sturdy containers.
