This simple spiced apple sauce is great to share with the kids. It is also a wonderful base for other recipes such as a Fruit Galette.
Steps
1
Making the Apple Sauce
Ingredients
3 cups unsweetened applesauce, homemade or store-bought (organic is best)
1/3 cup granulated sugar: cane, maple sugar, coconut sugar, add more to taste
1 tbsp finely grated lemon
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp grated nutmeg
Combine the applesauce, sugar, zest, juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a medium skillet. Place over medium heat and bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally. Cook for about 10 minutes or until the applesauce is bubbling and the sugar has dissolved.
Taste the applesauce and, if not sweet enough, add more sugar, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Spoon the applesauce into a shallow dish and set aside to cool to room temperature.
This is a great base sauce to pair with other fruit to make a Fruit Galette. Add cranberries or blueberries to the applesauce or switch the apples for pears for a delicate pear sauce.
